The Blog

I love writing about my photography experiences. I am encouraged by the feedback I get and it seems like my blog posts are useful to people. It is usually a combination of descriptions of my outings and reviews of gear that I’ve bought and used. I like to think it’s a more realistic and genuine approach than much of the influence-riddled sponsored stuff you see on social media these days.

I have imported many blog posts from my old tobinators.com website which I had archived. I’ll gradually be going through those and adding back the images and sorting the formatting, so bear with me. It’s a lot of work! So don’t be too baffled when you see a lot of unformatted text - the content is still there.

Cracking

Photography is often an excuse for just being outside, exploring and finding new places. Sometimes a nice photograph is a bonus to the main event of gently wandering around the countryside. Here is the result of an extremely enjoyable outing with my pal Paddy, finding another lone tree on rock composition that is full of drama and feeling.

A Different Composition

Revisiting a beautiful spot in the Torrin area, I try a different composition of a scene that I have shot before. Overnight snow highlighted the mountains, and salt on the road brightened it up as a good lead-in.

Revisiting A Gate

In this post I revisit a favourite location in Glen Brittle to get some drama that I missed in a shot from two years before. I’ll also describe how small changes in position or settings can make big differences to the end result.

No Set Agenda

A short post on the importance of having an open mind to let creativity flow. This was the agenda for an afternoon of gentle monochrome photography on the Sleat peninsula in the Isle of Skye.

Cascades of Happiness

What was going to be a quick 30 minute session in the Isle of Skye turned into a rather long uphill hike to a beautiful series of cascading waterfalls. The photography was great, but even better was the feeling of being alive and invigorated afterwards. What a brilliant day.

And the results are in…

It is extremely nerve wracking for me when my book gets into the hands of real people who have paid proper money for it. Turns out I needn’t have worried! Here are some quotes from happy Glas readers from New Zealand to Denmark to the UK and beyond.

Flashback: Shooting Helicopters

Recounting “borrowing” a rather nice helicopter for a shoot involving remote radio-triggered flashes. Would everything work? This was one of the most fun and exciting shoots I’ve been involved in.

Photographing Over-Tourism In Florence

Florence. Beautiful, stunning, inspiring. And packed to the gills with so many tourists, even in the shoulder-season with the kids back at school. In this article I use my in-camera composite technique to portray how Florence feels as it labours under the unremitting press of over-tourism.

A Trip To Torrin

A brilliant day of photography as autumnal weather brings fantastic conditions. Starting in Sleat and immediately distracted by the epic scene across to the mainland, and then moving on to the Torrin area which is so full of opportunity. Join me and my Leica Q3 for a day out in Skye’s beautiful landscape.

Last Of Skye’s Autumn Colour

I visit a favourite location that is at its best for less than two weeks every year. It is a beautiful scene, down in a tricky gorge, festooned with autumn colour. With most of the leaves blown off the trees in the recent storms, the trees down in these little valleys have been protected from the gales and have had a chance to give us all a beautiful show for my Leica Q3 and Sony A7III with Mitakon 50mm f/0.95.

Now For Something Completely Different

Let’s face it, London sucks. Too many people, too much traffic, too loud, too expensive. But it is a great place for photography. Today’s self-inflicted challenge was to photograph it in a different way that captured the uniqueness and feeling of London, but without the typical street-photography vibe.

Heat Haze Problems

I didn’t think this would ever happen here, but I had to abort a very nice photography session here in Skye due to heat haze. I wanted to re-shoot a particular scene for my new book, Glas, but things didn’t quite go to plan.
