About Lens 57

Lens 57 is owned and operated by photographer and author Andrew Tobin.

Andrew has photographed subjects as varied as the football World Cup, glamorous weddings and the someone ironing in a multi-storey car park. His work has been published in all the UK national newspapers including front and back pages, and around the world from Japan to India to Australia. He has been awarded a Gold Medal from the London Salon of Photography and Digital Photographer’s Urban Photographer of the Year.

His photographic soul is split between the beautiful landscapes and interesting people of the west coast of Scotland, and the vibrancy and chaos of London.

His first book, “Skye At Night”, showcases the landscapes and people of Skye between sunset and sunrise. It was an instant success, selling out in days. It is the product of five years of night-time hikes, exploring remote caves and clifftops and mountainsides, and meeting the most fantastic people who keep the island ticking while everyone else is sleeping. Andrew donates all the profits from the book to the Skye Mountain Rescue Team, totalling over £6,250 to date.

His second book, “Glas”, is the product of seventeen years of photography of the Isle of Skye. It is a very limited edition luxury volume of over two hundred pages of black-and-white images complemented by the Gaelic verse of Rody Gorman and a foreword by Lord Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald. The book is accompanied by a Photography Index in a presentation slip case.

In parallel with his work in Scotland, Andrew is working on two series of urban photographs, “Impressions of London” and “The Horde: Over-Tourism”. In order to capture the press of humanity, colour, claustrophobia and movement, he has created an innovative in-camera technique that intentionally overlays imperfect superposition of a very large number of exposures in a single image

After many requests, Andrew has now offers bespoke one-to-one photography experiences on the Isle of Skye. These are dedicated and planned specifically for you, to help you achieve your best photography experience on this beautiful island, in comfort and without distractions. Andrew has a partnership with Kinloch Lodge to run their Photography Retreats so you can have an incredible place to stay during your visit to Skye.

The name “Lens 57” could refer to the number of camera lenses Andrew has owned in his photography career, but it actually represents the latitude of the Isle of Skye at 57 degrees north while being vaguely photography related. And everyone loves a short URL.

Andrew has restored many of the blog posts from his old website, tobinators.com, to this website. A lot of that content is still relevant and useful, and is being reformatted over time to suit this new design.
