Leica Q3 150 sec f/16 ISO 100 Photography is often an excuse for just being outside, exploring and finding new places. Sometimes a nice photograph is a bonus to the main event of gently wandering around the countryside. I find the geology of Skye to be extremely interesting. People travel from far away to study the rock formations that vary hugely across the island. There’s a really good study here if you would like to know more. I spent a bit of time at university studying geology, with many of the lectures being as impenetrable as the rocks that were their subject matter. It was the field trips that I enjoyed most. Looking closely at how the land has been formed and how the shapes we see now reflect the massive forces that folded and fractured the earth’s crust. While I don’t remember much about what I learned back then, I do go out of my way to try and find out more about the stuff I’m standing on. This in turn enables me to be more efficient in my search for interesting photography spots. In particular, the elusive lone-tree-on-a-rocky-pavement composition that I enjoy finding and photographing so much. Here, then, we have an interesting feature, and I hope I’ve got this right. On the left side is fissured, fractured and eroded dolostone pavement. Dolostone is a limestone that has been altered by magnesium-rich groundwater, making it a bit harder than limestone and a darker grey colour. I decided another visit was in order as overnight snow had dusted the peaks making them look even more imposing. It is a fairly well known location. You can't really miss it as you drive to Elgol. It is a little tricky to compose well, and I usually shoot it from a lot closer with a zoom lens at about 100mm to exclude the road and the "Passing Place" sign. There is a lot of small positional adjustment needed to get the trees framed nicely by the mountains and not breaking the ridgeline. I spent a bit longer than usual there today exploring different angles and focal lengths. During a recent 1-1 workshop as part of my Kinloch Lodge photography retreats, a client shot this with the road in the frame, albeit from a completely different angle to this. Hmmmm I thought. I'll need to give that a go. So this time I walked a fair way back along the road, got down low and had another go. Including the sign is a little "unconventional" but I'm somewhat of a veteran of photographing Passing Place signs and they are such a key part of Skye's environment that it feels right in this case. In my usual way, I captured a number of angles, unable to decide on location which would be best. Leica Q3, 0.5 sec, f/16 ISO 50 During my visit back in the winter of 2024, the mountains were nicely snowcapped, which I think adds a really ominous aspect to them as well as enhancing their scale. They must be really big to have snow on top. I spent a very pleasant while examining different compositional opportunities combining the grasses and mountains, but they lacked an “anchor” to bridge the foreground and background. And there’s an annoying fence all the way along as well. Interspersed here and there along the fence are some little gates. These let people from the campsite just beyond the fence get easy access down to the beach. I figured I could use one of these gates as my anchor, thereby giving some context to the picture and providing a human element (“if I open that gate, where could it lead…”). Much micro-positioning then ensued as I tried to find a decent way of bringing together the three components of grasses, gate and mountains. Eventually I found something of a wiggly line leading through the grasses, up to the gate, then to a valley up to the mountains on the horizon. Whoop. However, the sky wasn’t really playing ball. It lacked drama and was a bit dull. Leica Q3 1/80th f/10 ISO 100 I had already decided to position the gate closer in the frame to make it larger. Using a fairly wide angle of 28mm, this also makes the mountains look bigger in relation to the gate. Small-ish changes like this, minor adjustments in position, can make a lot of difference to the final result. As another example, I didn’t want the left-hand gatepost to break the ridge line of the mountains behind. That would break the continuity of that line and be a bit jarring. I also wanted enough of a lead-in line in the shape of the grasses to take the eye up the image, to the gate, and then beyond. More small adjustments needed to keep all these elements in the “right” places in relation to each other. I had decided to abandon my tripod and just hand-hold the camera due to the need for speed in the rapidly changing weather conditions. The little Leica Q3 has very good image stabilisation and I was happy at 1/60th of a second. I decided a bit of movement in the grasses would be nice to emphasise the wind blowing at my face. Being picky, the gate is a little “tight” on the left hand side but had I turned the camera more to the left I’d have lost some of the mountains, and had I physically moved myself to the left I’d have lost the dark path that leads into the shot. Starting at the top of the cascades. Leica Q3 1sec f/14 ISO 100 With a spare day all to myself I thought it was time to head over to Glen Brittle for a good look around. There are so many amazing spots in this area that I already know, but I wanted to explore a part of this massive valley that I hadn’t been to before. The huge Cuillin range dominates the southern side, and pine-covered gentler hills lie more quietly on the northern side. In the summer the glen is a madcap mix of chaos and overcrowding as tourists pour in to see the Fairy Pools. It’s much better in the winter when, aside from a few residents and farmers, it is largely deserted. I wanted a waterfall shot, with the snowcapped Cuillin in the background. Not the Fairy Pools, which I have spent a good amount of time studying. I wanted to be further down the glen. Leica Q3 1 sec f/14 ISO 100 Parking up at a suitable spot, I thought a short walk up a side valley would get me what I wanted. Things are never that easy of course. The river has cut a deep chasm into the land, gouging out its course by exploiting fractures in the bedrock. The water is cold, and as clear as glass. Multi-coloured rounded pebbles cover the bottom as though someone has spilled all their marbles. Making a composition of the river and the mountains was proving impossible, so it was time to head upwards. The river decided to curve to the left as I walked up the decent, crunchy gravel path. This angle took away the mountain backdrop, so I kept walking. Gradually, the river turned back so I was looking up towards the Cuillin, but a large rise blocked a lot of the view of the mountains. I was starting to see how this day was going to go. I was going to end up doing a lot more walking than I had anticipated. Of course I hadn’t packed any food or drink as I had anticipated a 30 minute shoot, but the crystal clear water from the snowfield above was more than adequate for keeping me refreshed. Maybe there was a dead sheep further up in the channel, but I am still alive as I type this so I suspect not. It tasted beautiful. Leica Q3 0.6 sec f/16 Upwards, with the river tantalisingly down to my left teasing gently. After much puffing and panting and false summits, I crested another rise, turned a corner, and I could see a series of waterfalls cascading down some rocky slabs. Beautiful. I decided to start at the top and work my way back down, so I climbed another 100 meters or so to find the most wonderful target-rich environment I could have wished for. I started to scope out compositions , picked my first at the bottom of a spreading series of falls, and got myself set up. Periodically, a ferociously cutting wind would funnel down the valley with great force. These katabatic winds are driven by cold air from the snow fields above sinking downhill and concentrating into valleys, much like the water does. They were sudden and powerful enough to blow me and my tripod over if I wasn’t paying attention to my foot positioning on the grippy, dry gabbro (I think). The wind was preventing me from flying my drone which would have allowed a bit more flexibility with a number of the compositions I wanted, where being 2 meters higher would have made all the difference. I needed some more help as well, and my friend Gordon volunteered to assist. As well as technical help, it’s always good to have a friend on hand to help to bounce ideas and solve problems on location. A date was set, and furious planning followed. Gordon and I worked out that we ideally wanted a head-on shot with the helicopter looking as straight and level as possible. We also wanted to photograph at dusk, with some light in the sky but not so much that it would overwhelm the light from the flash inside the cockpit. Getting that light balance would prove to be one of the most tricky aspects of the shoot (aside from not dying). I listed all the gear I’d need. My Canon 1Dmk3 with a 70-200 f/2.8 lens was the weapon of choice. Accurate, fast and extremely capable, it was just what I needed. A couple of cheap Yongnuo flashes would provide the light. I already had Pocket Wizard Plus II wireless flash triggers. These are very simple items that just transmit a “flash now!” signal from the camera to the flash. The sun set and light levels started to drop so we moved into action. Our earlier testing, with Gordon in the pilot’s seat, had confirmed roughly what flash power we would need. Because I couldn’t adjust the flashes remotely, I needed to get the power set prior to takeoff. With Philip now in position, I did some more flash power tests and settled on a setting that would work. Balancing the ambient light with the flash was most important. I wanted the aircraft and sky to be slightly underexposed so the lit cockpit showed up really well. Another key consideration was having some rotor blur while keeping the aircraft sharp and in focus. This would reinforce that the helicopter was flying, otherwise it might look too static and frozen. Earlier testing with randomly operating helicopters at the airfield gave me a shutter speed of 1/125th, so that was my main parameter. Aperture didn’t really matter too much other than to keep the shutter speed at 1/125th and I started at f/8. Amazingly, the little Ricoh can create a RAW file of the final composite, as well as a JPG. This seems unique and is a very welcome feature, and it allows a lot of editing flexibility as is the way with RAW files. I am not 100% sure how the camera does this, as a RAW file contains the exact readout of the sensor, but I guess the camera software must apply the composite processing to the RAW file that is shot as well as to the JPG when running its “average”, “additive” or “bright” algorithm. This would account for why it takes four to five seconds of processing per frame. As I have become more experienced with this technique, I have learned a bit more about what works and what doesn’t. Some scenes look like they could be amazing, but the resulting composite just looks rubbish (technical term). I have found that, just like in “normal” photography, a good composition is essential. But with composites like this, things are a bit different. A bold and distinctive shape is required to provide a key to the shot. Leica Q3 200 sec f/16 ISO 100 ND1000+ND8 Once I was satisfied with my efforts I headed over to the Torrin area. A week earlier I had a client with me on one of my 1-1 workshops and I found this composition for him. I never take my own pictures when out with a client, so I promised myself I’d come back to this spot to make my own image. This area is very hard to photograph. On arrival it seems epic, with an amazing mountain backdrop, a lovely loch, and a load of fractured rocks for a foreground. But when you actually try to create a simple composition that is simple and makes sense, things become a lot more difficult. It is just very messy. A “traditional” landscape shot of a distinctive foreground leading to an interesting middle-distance, with a good horizon interest and characterful sky was my target. But while all the rocks looked good initially, trying to find a setup that works was very difficult. After some snooping around while my client was getting set up, I found this line of pebbles through a cleft in the dark rocks. “This is it!” I thought. No that I was feeling any pressure of providing my client with a stunning image of course. Leica Q3 300sec f/16 ISO 100 ND1000 Onwards then, towards the head of Loch Slapin and one of the most frustrating and rewarding of subjects, a salt marsh. Frustrating because it is so tremendously hard to find a spot that is just right to make a good composition. So rewarding because, when you find that spot the resulting image can be fantastic. Torrin’s salt marsh is no exception. I spent a couple of hours nosing around what is quite a large area trying to find some photogenic shapes. The clearly defined edges of the grassy bits can work very well if they are nicely oriented and there’s no messy seaweed or crab shells littered around them. I have been here many times before, but I always seem to end up in different spots. Probably not a bad thing as I don’t want to just photograph the same spot every time. This time I found a rather nice tributary trickling nicely towards the sea. The curved foreground bank holds the bottom of the image together. I deliberately didn’t use a polariser as I wanted the sky’s reflection to brighten the surface of the water, enhancing its shape and the way it points towards the mountains in the distance. A bit of soft skimming light brought out the texture of the grassy mounds cut through with more water channels, and highlighted the distant ridge line. Obviously this is another long exposure. I was well into my groove by this point. The sky was just working really well for long exposures, with clouds and blue sky creating very nice streaked textures. I really like this shot. This much-redeveloped area now has a massive tube station entrance, and is a lot less tatty than it used to be. Some of these tall signs point the way to the Underground. The design is iconic, so had to be part of this little project. I decided to use the same walking-around-in-an-arc approach that I used in Soho Gardens. It was a bit tricker though due to the road, fast moving illegal electric bicycles and buses thundering past. I just took my time and gradually worked my way around in a 45-degree arc, keeping the focus point on the red circle of the sign. The background works nicely here. It is the Centre Point office block, now converted into flats I believe. The strong lines and light blue colour from the reflected sky work rather nicely. There is just enough of the sign to be legible, and plenty of ghostly images of people so get across the feeling for how busy the place (and London itself) is. One problem I did have was that if the camera turns itself off to save power (I have a 3-minute power-off set), your beautifully constructed composite is lost forever. Leica Q3 1/2000th f/1.7 ISO 100 Moving around is a bit tricky as there are holes and sharp edges everywhere. Care has to be taken but the rewards are worth it. There are intriguing shapes, nooks and crannies everywhere. The difficult bit is trying to make sense of it in a two-dimensional photograph. The Sea Pinks image works nicely with a shallow depth of field from the wide aperture setting. You get a feeling for the coastal environment without the background interfering. The star-shaped fracture shot is an example of finding some sort of order in the chaos. With cracked rock everywhere, trying to make sense of it involves trying to find some recognisable shape to focus on. And the shot on the left shows some ferns growing in a tiny gap in the dolomite. You can see how sharp and serrated the edges are. How anything survives in such a hostile environment is a mystery. Anyhow, onto the time-lapse which is below. This was shot at 1-second intervals on the GoPro in “Linear” lens mode. I’d prefer more dramatic clouds so I may just have to go back again. Just one frame, no composites. I did take some “normal” photographs as well, with just a single frame and no compositing. The bright sunshine and deep shadows were stars of the show once again. Back at the Thames at the National Theatre, I took advantage of some more raised walkways and looked for people walking along a particular shadow line. With the orientation of the sun, a person walking just inside the shadow would be lit against the shaded pavement, with their shadow emerging into the sunlit side. The GR3 is an excellent camera for this sort of thing. I didn’t really miss a viewfinder at all especially as I was using the high contrast black and white mode. This makes it easy to see bold shapes in the compostion really easily. For those unfamiliar with lens filters, I use “neutral density” (ND) filters to reduce the amount of light entering the lens, thus slowing the camera’s shutter speed to create very long exposures (say two minutes) to show cloud movement and make rough water still. ND filters are uncoloured (hence “neutral”) and should not introduce any colour cast onto your images. For waterfalls, I’ll use them to show some water movement and flow with a shutter speed of half a second. This one was also positioned precariously on a steep rocky slope amongst the sharpest fractured limestone I’ve come across. Not only were the fissures leg-breaking should you drop into one at the wrong ankle, but the top edges of the rock fragments were serrated and sharp as knives. As a result it was quite a challenge just to move around, let alone figure out how to take a picture of the scene. In these situations, I usually find it easier just to leave the camera and tripod behind and walk around the location looking at it from as many different angles as possible. This helps to keep balance and avoid slicing one’s hands to ribbons. After several circumnavigations of this tree, I settled on the composition you see here. The foreground limestone can make for an incredibly confusing scene so I wanted to try and bring some order to it somehow. Having this almost contiguous fissure leading up to the tree was my answer. It gives the resulting image some structure and form. This can be fine if you are doing silhouettes. But in the case of this shot, the castle and arched entryway are key features of the scene. The contextual positioning is important as well which requires the sea to be in shot. To get some light onto the foreground, it is possible to use a torch. But I find that this looks very unnatural as it is usually the photographer shining the torch from the camera position, not somewhere any light would ever come from. Alternatively, I could take a separate shot at a really long exposure time, like 3-5 minutes, for the foreground and blend them afterwards in Photoshop, but that’s quite a hassle. Always better to do it in one shot if possible. So these days, I always pack my drone (DJI Mini 4 Pro) in my bag for my night photography sessions. I have found that the auxiliary (“landing”) light is superb for this. I have set up a rear button on the controller to turn the light on and off. It’s as simple as flying the drone up, positioning it usually to one side and not in view of the camera, and just letting it sit there hovering until I open the shutter. Then I’ll turn the drone light on for 5 seconds or so, and it’s done. You can see the effect on this shot. You pull down the central column and twist it to adjust the position of the base. There are so many tripods out there these days that it’s really difficult to decide what to buy. This is especially the case if you are buying online. I always want to try before I buy when it comes to tripods, which can be tricky on the Isle of Skye. Conveniently, I was on a photography outing with my friend Paddy and noticed he had a rather nice tripod. It was by a make I’d never come across, “Kingjoy”. The quality looked top notch which made it even stranger that I hadn’t heard of the maker before. He said that well-known Skye photographer Marcus McAdam sold them through his Skye Photo Academy business, so it could be possible for me to see some of the range before handing over my hard-earned cash. After a few emails to Marcus, we arranged a dodgy-looking meeting in a supermarket carpark. Marcus had done a proper job and brought five different tripods for me to look at which was very good of him. The triangular levers unlock and lock the gears for quick coarse adjustment, and the round knobs move the gears for very precise adjustment. Initially I thought it was the same thing, as it looks so similar, even down to the D4/G4 name. But it turns out that it is a less-than-half-price almost identical copy from Chinese firm Leofoto. They are part of a much larger Guangdong Laitu Imaging Technology Co. and specialise in making tripods and heads that mimic those from Arca Swiss. I looked at the Leofoto G4 Pro in more detail. The excellent diagrams on their website show precision machined worm gears inside a solid-looking body. As with the Arca Swiss, it has quick-adjustment levers to unlock the horizontal/vertical gears to get the camera into a rough position with minimal hassle. It also has a geared pan adjuster in the top plate along with an un-geared pan adjustment where it mounts to the tripod base. So 3-axis geared adjustment plus an additional panorama adjuster. Mmmmm….nice. The images also confirmed that the head could be tilted ninety degrees to allow for shooting in portrait orientation without having to remove the camera from the plate and use an L-bracket. Lying the tripod on the ground while picking up other things can have that effect. Also, the sand-covered large dog that jumped up all over me on the beach you see in the pictures above did a great job showering the head in wet sand. Some protection is required for when the tripod is not in use. On previous photo workshops, I’ve seen people with posh tripods using little drawstring bags to protect their heads. Some searching on Amazon revealed a cheap and simple climber’s chalk bag, for £6.99. I chose an easy-to-see bright green version. It fits the head very nicely, has a drawstring to keep the bag on, and can be tethered onto the tripod to stop it blowing away or being left behind. There’s something about the really clean delineation between the deep pools and the grassy land. I will often spend ages looking around them to find an oddly shaped pool that I can somehow construct into an attractively composed image. I spent about an hour wandering around this one which is just on the way to the cottages in the previous shot. I knew there was something worthwhile if only I could work out the puzzle of pools, inlets, hummocks and grasses. After lots of trial and error I found this pool, and worked out a composition that would capture the moon’s reflection (a bit like the lochan shot a couple of posts ago) to emphasise the shape of the pool, but not have the moon actually reflected in the water to avoid it blowing out the exposure. I ended up hiding the moon’d reflection in that sticky-out bit on the left of the pool. Same camera settings as the previous two images.
